Kairi plays a close ally of Riku and Sora, and makes one of the seven Heart Princesses. According to the designer, Tetsuya Nomura, the name Kairi can take to mean “sea”. Hayden Panettiere voices her in English in the games Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories and Alyson Stoner. However, she is later voiced in Japanese by Risa Uchida.

Initially an inhabitant of a radiant Garden, Kairi was sent by Xehanort to the Islands of Destiny some few years before Kingdom Hearts events to spy on the link between a Key blade bearer and the Princess of Heart. Kairi is only fourteen when the series kicks off. When the Islands of Destiny are brought down by the Heartless, Kairi’s heart leaves her body and gets into the body of her friend Sora. This makes Sora to see the visions of Kairi. In an effort to find a way of raising her, Riku; the other Kairi’s ally carries in her body to a hollow Bastion. This is where Kairi is revealed as a Heart Princess, and therefore restored as a human being. However, Kairi is later captured and put in a jail cell together with her buddy Pluto. Later on, with the help of Namine, she escapes the dread of Raiku and Saix. She finally gets her Key-blade and uses it to fight the Heartless.
